Apicella + Bunton was engaged to design a master plan that built upon the existing character and fabric of the pedestrian friendly, downtown neighborhood of historic Westport, Connecticut.

Apicella + Bunton collaborated with a private developer to create a new retail and residential destination that could adaptively reuse the existing, historic Westport YMCA building. Our proposal calls for converting the existing building into retail space, with office space above. A new structure will house additional retail and townhouse configured residences.

Situated between the old and new buildings, a new courtyard provides a public green space and creates opportunities for a variety of storefront experiences, with some facing the street and others accessed from the courtyard. Two alleyways, leading into the development from Main Street and Church Lane, create alternative routes through the site and provide additional frontage to retailers and eateries.

The new structures will reference the architectural language of the original YMCA building but will embrace a modern idiom, related to the eclectic style and scale of Westport.
