Steinbach Hall

New Haven, CT

Built in 1849 and designed by architect Henry Austin, the John Pitkin Norton House is a three-story Italian Villa style in the Historic Hillhouse District of New Haven. Now known as Steinbach Hall, Apicella + Bunton Architects renovated it to become one of four buildings on Hillhouse Avenue to house the Jackson School of Global Affairs at Yale University.

The building contains offices and lounge space for faculty, staff, and postdocs of the Jackson School, as well as a suite for the International Leadership Center (ILC). The suite was brought to life by blending historic and modern elements to create a harmonious space. New storefront systems were carefully integrated without disrupting the character of the original wood detailing.

A+B worked closely with the client and users of the building to select modern and functional furniture in all spaces. Flexibility and comfort were priorities for users who meet here in large and small groups. The palette is light and inviting, creating a tailored experience for ILC Fellows.
