Lapham Field House

West Haven, CT

Apicella + Bunton’s comprehensive renovation of the interior and exterior of Lapham Field House modernized the home of Yale University’s football team and the men’s and women’s cross country and track and field teams. As the home of coaches and student athletes for over a century, the building marks the entrance to the athletic campus.

A comprehensive interior renovation of all spaces was undertaken, providing new HVAC systems, finishes, furnishings, lighting and extensive graphic design elements celebrating the history of Yale football, track and field, and notable alumni. The lobby showcases these achievements and provides a gathering space for current and prospective athletes around the original hearth. Off of the lobby is a recruiting booth equipped with professional photography and lighting capabilities for use by the marketing department and a meeting room for coaches and staff.

Throughout the building, meeting rooms of various sizes offer coaches and athletes a classroom-like environment for strategic training. The largest team meeting room can accommodate the entire football team in generously sized fixed theater seating in front of white boards and projection screens. Overhead insulated coiling doors serve as a room divider, allowing the room to be used simultaneously for two smaller groups or as a single space for large functions.

Yale-branded, custom solid surface lockers were designed specifically for each sport teams’ needs. Separate visiting team and staff locker rooms are also housed in the building. Individual team lounges are located adjacent to the locker rooms an include spaces for meals, study and relaxing.

An expanded equipment lab which supports all teams on Yale’s athletic campus was given its own loading dock for ease of distribution of equipment, and includes laundry units, high density storage, and operations work areas.

The top floor of the building, once a maze of coaches locker rooms, was opened up to encompass the full building footprint, providing a large dining and event space for the athletic teams. The space is served by a large Nutrition Center where meals are plated and personalized fueling and dietary plans are created. Accessibility and functionality was greatly improved and simplified by the new elevator which was carefully located in the split-level building.
